Our Mission

Our mission is to see the communities of Zeway, Ethiopia and Austin, Texas transformed as together we stand in the gap to provide for the needs of orphans. We believe that caring for orphans changes the lives of all those involved resulting in the spread of hope within communities.

What began as the “Zeway Project” quickly evolved into the Zeway PARTNERSHIP, a partnership between churches in Austin, Texas, local churches in the Zeway area and Food for the Hungry, a Christian relief and development organization.

Walking with Food for the Hungry and coming alongside local churches in the Zeway area, we are helping and equipping the community to meet the needs of the orphans and to find solutions to end the orphan crisis in these villages (including local adoption).

As the Austin church, we are also being transformed. Individual families and small groups have learned about these orphans, prayed for them by name, donated to the partnership and visited the children in Zeway.

Our Beliefs

We believe that we are all biblically called to care for orphans, and when we do, there is transformation in our lives along with those we serve. God calls Himself a Father to the fatherless and clearly states in the Bible that we are to care for orphans, to visit them and seek justice on their behalf.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress. James 1:27

Learn to do good; seek justice, reprove the ruthless, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. Isaiah 1:17

And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. Isaiah 58:10

Our History

In 2009, Bridges of Grace, the orphan and adoption ministry at Grace Covenant Church, learned about the orphan-led households in Zeway, Ethiopia and nearby villages through a relationship with Food for the Hungry. We learned that there were about 40 children who had lost both their mother and father and were living on their own, fending for themselves, completely vulnerable and often solely responsible for raising younger siblings.

With 150 million orphans worldwide and approximately 6 million orphans living in Ethiopia, Food for the Hungry desired to be a leading organization in providing long-term solutions to end the global orphan crisis, and we wanted to help.

We visited in 2009 to meet these children, spend time in their homes, meet with leaders in the community and local churches and to get to know the local Food for the Hungry staff. What resulted was a multi-year, $700,000+ partnership commitment between the local churches in Zeway, Food for the Hungry and Grace Covenant Church to address the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual needs of 150 orphans in Zeway and nearby villages.
